Semi-official let us discuss electronics thread.
It is slow, but it's not the end of the world. Don't expect to go thought 10k songs at a stoplight and find your favorite "Air Supply" tune before the light turns green. That isn't going to happen. The trick is to make a playlist with all your favorite songs, find that and press play. The ease of the ipod and itunes simply does not exist with a HU user interface, at least not yet.
My playlists generally last anywhere from 4 to five hours. None contain Air Supply.

Do you have the 420i? I really have heard bad things about the usability/ui of it.
hope this helps!

I have been "told" that the 420i is painfully slow with large collections. If this is true (not an iPod owner yet myself) I am going to want a newer Alpine hu with the direct connection/full-speed

Alpine "claims" it is full speed> same as using it on the iPod itself on the new '06 headunits.
