I have spent soo much time in Ohau that I could be a tour guide. Also been to Maui and Kuai.

Don't forget that one section of the road to Hana is off-limits to rental vehicles. OR they wont' cover it if something happens. Definitely drive up the Mountain though .... that is awesome to see!
When my parents went with me to Maui, we drove all the way around Haleakala on the dirt road that is off-limits by rental car agencies. I think it's B.S. The roads are not that bad at all. They are a little narrow in places but I drove a Chrysler LHS, not a huge car, but bigger than most and had no problems at all.

Like ACLR8 said, definitely drive to the top of Haleakala. The view from the top is breath taking and the drive very fun. Lot's of hairpins and switchbacks. In fact, the road holds the record for the fastest elevation change in the shortest distance going from sea level to 10,000 ft in 38 miles. Here's a link...

Haleakala

Another rant, I know. But damn I miss Hawaii. Here is some worthless trivia, there are only 12 letters in the Hawaiian alphabet. A, E, I, O, U, H, K, L, M, N, P, and W. Every consonant in Hawaiian words is followed by a vowel. Example: Honolulu, Maui, Hawaii, Haleakala and Aloha.
