I believe you can be called for offside if you are judged to be obstructing the vision of, or distracting, a defender/goalie. I might be wrong but that's what it looked like Ronaldo was called for. He certainly didn't touch the ball, and he was facing away from goal.
It is to do with interfering with play ..... any player that is in the penalty area must be interfering with play since the goalkeeper can't ignore that player, so has to cover where the ball is coming from but also consider that the ball could be passed to the player that is in an offside position .... they don't always get called, but quite often that is the reason for the offside decision.
