It looks to me like there was complete oil starvation down at the crankshaft. Probably all the bottom bearings seized against the crank and that's probably what blew out the walls on the bottom end, J. The top end probably had no problem keeping up with the dying bottom end (as long as the cam chain didn't stop spinning)...

All I can say is major ouch.
