There are a lot of cars out there that feel like crap and actually perform quite well. Most of the older AMG products (prior to Mercedes bringing them in house) felt either really rough or really soft...yet their performance measurements were amazing!
I think the Z8 is probably like that because it's softer sprun and the power band is a bit more lazy than what you would expect from a stellar performer, but the car is evidently quite well balanced so you can carry the speeds more efficiently.
Cars like the S and Modena and others that we think of as high performance cars tend to be somewhat more like an on/off switch rather than seamless...
