There are certain times when efficiency shouldn't necessarily be the driving force. One of those cases is when it comes to rushing a jury trial. I think the process of administering the trials should be appropriately speedy and efficient, but once the trial begins the end goal should be justice and not speed.
I think Grand Juries are a crock. They don't serve justice...they serve prosecution. If you want to make it fair, throw in a judge and someone arguing for the defense.

Have you sat on a jury, Brant? The process is painful. I don't agree with you, as I think it could be sped up without sacrificing fairness, but I do understand your point.
And, yup, in practice it seems that the grand jury thing is just rubber stamping the prosecution. I would be interested to know if/when a grand jury ever chooses to act against the prosecution... Of course, grand jury stuff is secret so we don't really know.
