My laptop is 5+ years old now. The battery is dead, the IR port is dead and the display colors are off.
I have a 8 year old laptop. Display's dead, CD-ROM drive's dead (not sure about the floppy). But otherwise, it's mostly alive.

Slap that old puppy on a KVM and it makes a nice network appliance. Nice for whoring around when something serious is happening on the other PC... like iTunes.

Does anyone make an automatically switching KVM? Kind of like using two monitors on one computer. Moving the mouse off the edge of one monitor moves on to the other monitor. In this case, however, moving off the edge of the monitor switches to the other computer.

But for my purposes, I would just want a KM. So scrolling off one monitor switches the keyboard and mouse to the other computer with it's own monitor.

You can do that with Win2000, XP or Mac

Now I just need to buy an inexpensive 15" LCD to give new life to the laptop.

For mac use your monitor setup
For XP best to search in "Help and support" for "Arrange Multiple Monitors" (easy)
For Win 2000 just right click desktop and select "Properties" - "Settings" and you'll see the monitor arrangement.

I think NP has something else in mind. And I don't think what he has in mind is really possible, since KVM switches don't really know where the cursor is on the desktop, it just knows to send mouse movements along to whatever computer is currently selected.

To make what NP is talking about, you'd need to have the OS interact with the switch, which probably means a slightly more complex KVM switch, and specialized software.

Cool idea though.

I just installed Linux on it and set it up as my router/firewall (+web server etc).
