this is what i used:

very easy to do..just make sure you sync with itunes, so you have a backup of everything just in case.

i've been playing with stuff on cydia, mostly winterboard themes, and the Category App. phone seems a bit sluggish, once you customizing it's appearance

I just unlocked a first gen 8gb tonight. It was very easy. Now I just need to sell the phone.

Whats the best way to get the apps for it now?

there are apps available on bittorrent in packages of 100, 1000, etc... I've installed them using iTunes (just drag the .ipa's into itunes & sync) but they have either been buggy or haven't worked, so other than apps installed through cydia, most are downloaded through the app store.
