Miss Debs got the 3G S excuse me 3GS .. I have the 3G ..... 3.) runs smoother on the 3GS

 

I just got a 3GS, need some pointers on where to start with hacks and apps!

A little primer...

Jailbreaking - Modifying the iPhone OS to run applications other than the ones sanctioned by Apple through the App Store.

Unlocking - Modifying the cellular networking potion of the OS to be able to use it on other carriers. (you must jailbreak in order to unlock)

Since you're probably not trying to get your phone to work on Tmobile, you don't have to really worry about unlocking, unless you plan to sell the phone later on "unlocked" for some $$.

Once you use purplerain to jailbreak the phone, there will be a new application called Cydia that will show up. You can use this app to install various apps and themes to your phone.

Here are some I would search for and install, since they really improve the experience.
Best Clear Lock Screen - Removes the opaque titles bars on the lock screen. You can see your full background!
Supreme Preferences - Replaces the regular settings with far more comprehensive feature set. Trust me, its worth it. Too many to really list.
5 icon dock - Not limited to 4 icons on the dock. I have Phone, text, Mail, Web & Checkbook.
Blue Fire battery - Looks like the regular green battery when charging, but blue fire inside. Looks good.
Winterboard - App to enable disable visual preferences like themes, dialers, keyboards, icons, etc.

 

I jailbroke it last night but problem with every app I download from cydia. Keeps breaking springboard and phone goes into safe mode. Removing the apps recovers it.

 

mhmmmm... I wonder if this is 3gs specific.

 

i think the iDev team just released an updated version of redsn0w to jailbreak the 3gS...i may give it a shot today

I've been reading that purplerain is a bit buggy, but redsnow will work, so you ought to give that one a whirl.

 

i just jailbroke my 3gS using redsnow...everything seems fine for now. have started downloading some NES Roms!
