Blue Jasmine
Some say Streetcar Names Desire shares the plot points. I say this is Woody Allens latest/annual film about people and how they relate. This is a chick flix, saw it with my gf and got points, you can too with your significant other. Its a study in characters and one in particular, Jasime.
You watch this woman come apart, put herself back together , and come apart again. Surrounded by simple and complex characters ,including Andrew Dice Clay in a serious role, just adds to the story line. Set in NYC , Hamptons, and San Francisco it is a journey, complete with flashbacks, bringing the character back to where she began.
This is not a funny film, although there is pathos and some brief humor. This is a servious attempt to reveal the complex layers of the central characters as the world moves on around her. Some would call it a sad film, if it were not for some of the characters eventually finding their true selves and being true to them.
Wood did not make an appearance and no character "spoke for him". This is not a comedy or typical poke at rich people, although there is some of that.
I can see Blanchette getting an oscar nod, Allen getting oscar to come to his mantle piece for writing and direction. I did not enjoy the film, I can only give it a 3 outta 10 cause Blanchette nailed the role so well, in a Streep kinda way, she became the character, loosing her Austrailain accent and adopting the essence of this complex character.
