Tupac-Resurrection
Thanks Snipes. I had sooo much good stuff ... mostly East Coast
Special Ed
LOS (Leaders Of the New School... the group that Busta Rymes started with)
Boogy Down Productions Featuring KRS1
EPMD (still one of my favs)
Das FX
Kool G Rap
3rd Base
Chubb Rock
D nice
Black Sheep
- got rid of them all b/c they were tapes. Now I am stuck trying to DL them from Kazaa.
Its funny that many folks think that Eminem was the 1st white rapper to get respect but there were some guys from Brooklyn 3rd Base (Pete Nice and MC Serch) that were phenominal. Serch was a white kid that hung around a bunch of 5 percenters (a branch of the Nation of Islam)... GREAT style and delivery.

I still have all this stuff on vinyl! I have DJ equipment & have 3rd Bass, King Sun, Twin Hype, Everlast (before House of Pain), JVC Force, Big Daddy Kane, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Brand Nubian & much more!

Glad to see you have good taste and were one of the lucky ones like myself to see the start of hip-hop & watch it evolve....

OMG, I was just about to ask you the same thing!! Kamron was siiiiick with the mic. He was in House Party two or three (I can't remember). He was the first whiteguy with dreadlocks that I saw.
Their line was "black was not a color but a state of mind". I think they didn't get half the respect they deserved b/c of their name.
I can't believe I didn't mention plugs 1,2 and three aka De La Soul.
Oh here's one you might remember, Eazy-E was going to produce a group of white, jewish guys that were hardcore rapp. Theie name was "The blood of Abraham". No joke.. I don't he ever got around to it... died of AIDS.

I wasn't there for the evolution, although I am familiar with some of the name's being thrown around, but I was there for the revolution, which comprised of some pretty good rappers as well.. I'll have to check out some of these groups though, hope they're not too hard to find..
Evo,
Don't take the above postings as a flame on your knowledge of hip-hop. It wasn't meant to come as such. It was just cool to find another person into Old School.
For me, the new rappers have great skills, no doubt. It is the content of the music that sickens me. Like I stated, it was cool when there was a message of self-help and I don't mind rap that tells it like it is i.e. "know the ledge" by Erik B and Rakiem. What I despise is rap that glamorizes the "pimp/player/balla" lifestyle in a community that is plauged with violance, single parenthood, etc. Understand, it for a while, bling wasn't cool, fathering kids out of wedlock wasn't cool, fighting your brutha (of any color) wasn't cool. What was cool, was being an intelligent black man with a knoweldge of self and community.
Here are some recommendations..
RAP WITH A MESSAGE
-Paris (hardcore, panther rap... was on a violant rap but against the police and government)
-3rd base (Serch and Pete Nice would hand Eminem his ass in a battle)
-Poor Rightous Teachers or (PRT)
-Jungle Brothers (might find them under JBs)
-Tribe Called Quest
-Public Enemy (Fear of Black Planet... best album. good tracks from previous albums include: "Black Steel in the hour of Chaos"
Fun Rap
-Leaders of the New School (sick ryme styles)
If you PM me your address, I'll copy some of my downloaded MP3 files.
