Tenblade, definitely have to agree with you on Tribe Called Quest and Public Enemy.. gotta love Chuck D, I think he was one of the most political figures in hip-hop.. he lectures at universities as well in his spare time, which is also pretty cool.. and I agree, I'm fed up with all rap that glamourizes the pimp/balla/playa persona as you mentioned.. but there are still many good rappers in the past decade who have strayed away from that formula, and produced music that has rivaled anything else that has been heard spanning many decades...

I think sometimes pioneers of any genre get too much credit because they were just the first to do something, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you have perfected your craft, although I'm sure all the groups and figures mentioned were very talented MC's..

From A current or recent standpoint, there is still a lot of untapped talent to be exploited, I just hope that the recent barrage of rappin about 40's, Blunts, and Rims will stop, and we will get insightful, thought provoking lyrics..

Soul fly,
If you disagree with something I've written that's cool, but don't be codescending about it. As far me being a "connoisseur" of Hip-Hop, you don't jack about me, where I've lived, the music I grew up nor the people I've been friends with. Yet, you take a condescending tone and make the effort to single me out.
So, I'll repspond...
I've been a fan aHip-Hop since the early days as demonstrated.
I can guess from the lines you quote, you assume that I am some whitebread punk from the burbs that doesn't know hard times. Well, if that's you assumption than your dead wrong. I've lived in areas that would make many people cringe. The types of neighborhoods were widows were boarded and drugs were sold openly. So don't think for a second that I don't know about WTF goes down. I also know that just b/c you see that doesn't mean you have to follow down the same path. We all have decisions in our life. You can either do the easy thing i.e. hustle or the harder thing, which is make something of yourself. I chose the later. So Jay-Z is right. I don't like his stuff so I don't buy it. I'll go a step further and say that he is actually hurting his community. There's a difference between reporting and glamorizing. That's my opinion and I choose not to buy it nor support it.
So, in short, before you take a condescending tone and make assumptions, maybe you should find out what the other person is about.

hey, i didn't think that my tone was condescending, but if it was then sorry. i haven't assumed anything about you, why would i? i just don't glamorize the old school as you do, or think that my opinion on the said subject is infallible.

Sorry, it but it did seem pretty condescending. If it wasn't then, its cool. I do love the old school... I like rap with a message. But I don't think my opinion is infallible. I'd love to discuss, calmay with no flames, old school vs new.
Just wondering, but have you listened to any of the artist I named? (no flame, I am honestly wondering). I've listened to new school, and don't like most of it. I always give it try, but most of the time I'm just turned off to it. Now, there are some i.e. WTC that I thought were good. In the sense that they had sick skills. Content wise, I think they bordered glamorizing with reporting but I still liked it. It was very different than Snoop and the west coast stuff.
