You guys are scaring me. I've never read the novel but this girl I'm seeing really really wants to see it. It would suck to pay for my ticket, her ticket, popcorn and drinks to see a movie I don't get. I might have to go to the bookstore t0m0 and glance through it.
I read through the themes section of The Watchmen on wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watchmen. Pretty interesting read.

Most people go into the movie expecting something the movie isn't nor was ever meant to be. If you read the novel you would have known what you were going to see. Most people that complain never read the novel nor wanted to put any thought to the meanings behind what was going on in the world at the time the novel was written and the parallels about humanity.
For me to fully enjoy the movie I'd have to read the novel.
I never read the novel, and I enjoyed the movie.
Granted, being a three hour movie, there is going to be some downtime. It was kinda campy on some parts. I like how one of the critics stated it was somewhere in between the Batman starring George Clooney and the Dark Knight in terms of campiness.
It is basically a film noir in a comic book setting. If you approach this movie as just eye candy, you will be let down. It delves into some metaphysical themes that will largely put off the typical comic book movie crowd.
Bring an open mind and a thinking cap to this one. Its intricate.

there is some EXCELLENT books to read that are in graphic novel format. Yes they are comics in the definition that they have art with the story, but they are approached from start to finish by the authors and artists completely different than your traditional comic book.
please dont make yourself look silly by saying stuff like that because...you simply have no experience in the matter.
and many adults choose to read paperback fantasies both in book format and graphic novel...if they did not, the genre of fiction would not exist.

Ironic, Even.
For the record, and to not totally disrail this thread by the aforementioned statement, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and have not read the graphic novel. I only saw it once, and when I first left the theatre my initial response was that it was an okay movie. Over the weekend and through this week I've been enjoying the movie more and more. Mainly, because, there is so much discussion about it between those who enjoyed it, read the novel, and even those who didn't enjoy it but still wish to give their review. That's what a brilliant work does, and should do: spark controversy and discussion.
Reiterating the usual, this movie was definitely deep and philosophical. Obviously. I didn't quite understand and receive all the symbolism and underlying meanings until I left the movie and thought about it on my own. I had originally approached this movie as another superhero movie, and obviously I was let down in that approach. However, what I did get from it was profoundly greater than that of a cliche superhero movie. With Rorschach, the movie totally turns what is good and evil onto its head.
And stop talking about the blue penis. Sure, it was there, but it wasn't a distraction, and for it to be a distraction in the movie you had to REALLY be looking for it in each scene. It's blue, it blended in with his body, and it's natural to that of how a "god" would walk around most likely. It wasn't swinging between his legs saying "Hey, look at me". So stop talking about it because it didn't make any difference in the movie.

haven't seen the movie yet, but plan to. I just recently read the book and honestly wasn't blown away like everyone says. Was it good? ..yes, it is ...is it the best graphic novel <or comic book for that matter> I've ever read?....not by a long shot. But I'm a movie buff and look forward to see the adaptation.
