haven't seen the movie yet, but plan to. I just recently read the book and honestly wasn't blown away like everyone says. Was it good? ..yes, it is ...is it the best graphic novel <or comic book for that matter> I've ever read?....not by a long shot. But I'm a movie buff and look forward to see the adaptation.
what are the better ones, out of curiosity?

Most people go into the movie expecting something the movie isn't nor was ever meant to be. If you read the novel you would have known what you were going to see. Most people that complain never read the novel nor wanted to put any thought to the meanings behind what was going on in the world at the time the novel was written and the parallels about humanity.
100%

While I applaud the producers/filmmakers for their attempt at transferring this story to another medium, it would be practically impossible to capture the greatness of the original graphic novel with film. I am a HUGE fan of the graphic novel, and while I thought the movie was great, I automatically knew it wouldn't captivate moviegoers the way the novel did with readers. The story itself was absolutely amazing, but I still thought the movie translation was pretty good (for what it was)...just nowhere near as captivating as the book.

I think Alan Moore said it best: "My book is a comic book. Not a movie, not a novel. A comic book. It's been made in a certain way, and designed to be read a certain way: in an armchair, nice and cozy next to a fire, with a steaming cup of coffee."

Caught it this past weekend. I liked the story/concept and some of the character development, but found the movie lacking over-all.

I did not read the book, but believe the production team's goal should have been to deliver a complete and full story within the movie - even with the constraints of taking a 400+ page graphic novel and attempting to build a 2 hour (or 3 in the case) movie.

In this case I felt the movie was somewhat hollow in substance and they cheaped out on some of the effects and post production work. I thought the Dr. Manhattan character was poorly adapted from a special effects perspective and did not really fit into the way the rest of the movie was shot. Almost like they ran out of time or money and just had to get it to the box office.

Perhaps they should have taken a little more time to polish it up and ensure the story-line was properly developed so that it conveyed well on the screen. As an example look at the Kill Bill movies - Tarantino refused to shorten it to a two hour flick, opting to release two movies instead. Perhaps "Watchmen VOL 1" with a sequel would have worked better.

Did I feel I wasted my money - No. Could it have been better - Yes (IMHO)

GN's: if you're a fan of wolverine, Origins is good......the Joker backstory, The Killing Joke, was interesting. Batman: the Dark Knight Returns. These aren't as complex as what Watchmen was, but just as good.... and The Maxx was an awesome comic, very out there but it really draws you in, and they made a cartoon of it that was perfect.

I'll be honest though, I got into comics mostly for the artwork, and since everything went digital, I fell out of collecting. The art from the late 80's and early 90's were great. big fan of Todd McFarlane, Jim Lee, Jae Lee, Sam Keith and Frank Miller.

I just watched it...I have never read the comic...I did not read spoilers before hand.

Answer me this: Aside from Dr. Manhattan the rest of the heroes seem to be well trained in fighting but do not have super powers beyond being a little bit sronger or faster than normal. is this true?

the comedian punched through the corner of an interior wall and whats his face caught a bullet but the rest of the stuff seemed like something any stunt person could do.

Maybe I was not paying enough attention

You're right, none of the others had "super" powers.
