Default For Dragon Newbies

This is a previous post that I did.
Because of the expected turnout for the WTD 09 which will probably include many newbies, I thought it appropriate to put this up again.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are a few pointers that will help to keep you out of trouble and more importantly, prevent you from exploring the side of the mountain or river below.

I encourage any veterans of the dragon to add to this list.

1 STAY ON YOUR SIDE OF THE YELLOW LINE. LEFT OF CENTER KILLS!

2 MAKE CERTAIN THAT YOUR CAR IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION BEFORE YOU GO.
TIRES,BRAKES,FLUIDS.

3 LEAVE YOUR EGO AT HOME. WE ARE THERE TO HAVE FUN. YOU NEED NOT TRY TO IMPRESS ANYONE. THAT WILL GET YOU OR ONE OF US HURT OR WORSE.

4 IF YOU ARE APPROACHED FROM THE REAR BY A FASTER DRIVER(CAR OR 2 WHEELER) FIND A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OFF AND LET THEM BY.

5 ALWAYS ACKNOWLEDGE THE COURTESY OF OTHER DRIVERS WHO PULL OFF TO LET YOU PASS. A COUPLE OF TAPS ON THE HORN AND A WAVE ARE APPRECIATED.

6 WHEN APPROACHING THE OVERLOOK, ALWAYS REDUCE YOUR SPEED. THERE ARE PEOPLE CROSSING THE ROAD TO TAKE PICTURES OR CONVERSE AND VEHICLES PULLING BACK ON THE ROAD. IF YOU COME IN "HOT", THERE MAY NOT BE TIME TO REACT.

7 TO SAVE YOUR BRAKES,AFTER A RUN, DRIVE A MILE OF TWO TO LET THE CAR COOL DOWN. IN PARTICULAR, ALLOW THE BRAKES TO COOL BEFORE ENGAGING THE PARKING BRAKE.

8 SHOW RESPECT TO THE OTHERS ON THE DRAGON. WE HAVE A GOOD REPUTATION AS A GROUP AND WE DO NOT WANT THAT TARNISHED.

9 NEVER,NEVER CROSS THE YELLOW

Have fun and be safe.

Good to post this again Lee.....

We also have a meeting @ the gravel lot, for our newbies...and I sometimes think for "US" oldtimers too.....I think it's a very good time to collect your thoughts, catch your breath and go over any questions, before starting the "RUN"......

Make sure your cockpit is clean - loose items laying about will become a distraction!

Turn your lights on for safety - just because you can see, doesn't mean some old geezer (me) can see you.

Don't drive over your head trying to keep up with someone. There will always be someone else faster than you. This is no race. There is no first place!

Watch out for each other - if you pass a problem, let the oncoming traffic know about it. Flash your lights and hand signal for people to "back down" (particularly helpful if the problem is LEO).

Don't screw up in front of Killboy - you will be owned!

We all know that a dog running across the road caused that!

Good points in this thread.

I can add a few from previous Dragon experiences:

- Make sure you have a working spare tire and jack and wheel lock key!

- Drive the road, not the vehicle in front of you or behind you.

- Bring a basic tool set!

- Stay in your lane! Harleys leaned over with sparks flying and a woman on the back can't swerve out of your way!
