If you see a GMRS radio, they share seven of their frequencies with FRS radios but transmit with more power. Don't believe _any_ of the claims about range but you might get a small edge in range. GMRS is still a licensed service requiring an application and $85 per year. I don't know of a single person in the last two years that has gotten one to use the radios.

I'm legit. I have a GMRS license. And, I don't think it was as pricey as you said, it was about that for 5 years, not one year. My license is good until 2012.
