To me, the external mic input is the biggest selling point of the Hero2.
THIS

IMO, absolutely necessary for motorsports recording (unless you're willing to run a secondary mic device)
How would you do this? I was trying to think of something, but came up empty.

in my research i have found a lot of people using this to record audio and then syncing the audio to the video in your video editing software

How 'bout a couple of cans and a string to transmit sound from, say, the pass. side cargo net to the built-in mic?

yea something like what Patrick linked. you just need editing software after the fact to tie the audio from the recorder into the video from the camera, and not use the camera audio (even better, set the camera to not record audio, if possible). to sync them, just go clap your hands in view of the camera, which is a good sharp sound to synchronize with

or just say action as you press the record button...either way i would still be worried that it would be difficult to sync it exactly...but lots of people do it that way so it must not be too hard to do

Or, I saw some guys would go right up to the camera and clearly, in the cameras view, press the record button on what they were recording. Then it would be synced perfectly, because they could see exactly when it started recording.

im talking about syncing audio that was recorded separately on a different device (not the gopro). trying to get that audio synced up exactly (to the exact frame) seems like it wouldnt be easy...if it was off by even a frame or 2 it might sound funny because the audio wont be exactly matched to the video

Yea I know . I saw a video on youtbe, and a guy used his iPhone for the audio instead of his camera. He would start his camera, go up to the camera with his iPhone, and press the record on the iPhone so he knew which frame he started the recording.
