Thumbs up Thursday Eve Dinner/Drive

It seems like every year I show up on a Thursday for an event, there's a number of fellow S2ki'rs wondering what to do about dinner on the night before the event. Some people post in the lodge requests for food or plans, but perhaps we can organize something a bit more formal this time?

Maybe a late afternoon drive down to Robbinsville, Telico Plains, Maryville, or some other place somewhat nearby and end up at a restaurant for dinner? Any interest?

Yeah, that drive leaves at 2 pm and is two and a half hours out, ~2 hrs back. I'm thinking something a bit closer to home, so to speak, especially for the many people that arrive in the afternoon and would miss that drive's start. I won't be getting there until 4, so a drive that leaves at 2 obviously won't work, for example.

Leave closer to 5-6 pm, get some food, head back, but same general idea.

Organizing a drive for thursday afternoon is a good idea Matt. Last DBR I was on that very spot ... wondering what to do after I arrived. Thankfully Patrick and John were there and we did a Dragon run from 5:00-6:30 pm and had dinner with DBR participants @ the Wildwood Grill.

IMO, that is very convenient and you avoid driving the dragon at night or having to skip on a beer with dinner. Also, Tellico Plains is as far as Gatlinburg.

However, Robbinsville via Deals Gap (west) on the way in could be fun. The drive back to Fontana is Sweetwater Rd. (east) is just 30 minutes.

I like that one.

I try to avoid the dragon after dark.

I looked over the maps and times, and I got to thinking...

Leave Fontana Village around 4 pm, run through the Dragon and around to Telico (1.5-2 hrs), take the Cherohala Skyway back during sunset, maybe stop for the view, get in to Robbinsville for dinner (1.5-2 hrs), and then a night drive back to Fontana either up 129 or over to 28 (30-45 min).

Maybe its too much for Thursday, who knows, but the Skyway would be nice at sunset. Maybe just down 129 to Robbinsville, onto the skyway for a bit and back into town for dinner.

This loop (stopping in Tellico Plains instead of Robbinsville) will be done Saturday afternoon. Seems like a long drive after just getting to Fontana.
