still safe for auto-x though?
I would think so. I don't know exactly how big the camera is, but it shouldn't fly off the mount. And even if it did, if you tied some fishing line or something to the camera and each of the roll hoops "just in case", you should be golden.

My camcorder is much smaller, but my PVC glovebox mount works great at the GIR road course.

Send a PM to ZTEC (Nick). He is all over this type of stuff. Much experience with filming on drives and autocrosses.

Take a look the the "clamper pod" on ebay( about $15.) It's basically a C clamp with a camera mount on one end. I fold back the wind deflector and clamp it to that. I also have a small universal swivel head for it that lets me adjust it correctly.

I use it for auto-x with a small digital and it works good.

Those are cool. I wonder if they will stick on top of the secret compartment.

My other concern with putting it on top of the secret compartment is that I'm not sure it will be low enough to have a clear view under the rear view mirror.

It should. Mine did. Like I said, I replaced the windscreen on top of the secret compartment with a piece of pvc with the camcorder attached. It worked fine for me.

Also, I can't remember for sure about the S, but on most cars there is a screw you can loosen to slide the rear view mirror off the adhesive base. If it's for autocross use, you shouldn't even need the mirror there at all.
