When I bought my car a year ago the previous owner put an aem style cai on it. I usually don't drive in the rain but Sunday I had to drive someone home through a huge storm and while I was crusing through a sunpass lane my engine stalled and died. After about 5 times hitting the button it finally came to life. On the same trip I could hear the engine choking and losing power because of the rain. Needless to say I'm getting a different intake but as long as my engine didn't lock up there won't be any damage right?
This same thing happened to me. It was like a year ago probably. It was pouring and I was on I-4. The rain, combined with the mist kicking up off the street and other cars was incredible. All of a sudden my intake starting "whistling" very, very loud...then my engine started to choke up and finally stalled. I sat on the side of the road for like 5 mins - then I was able to start up again. It kept happening when it was raining really really hard.
It's been a year and I had no damage to my engine. I think what happens is that the filter starts getting soaked which seriously hampers its ability to pass air and the engine just suffocates. As long as you don't submerge your intake, you should be fine...at least that's what I keep hearing.
I never did like the AEM "drinking straw" intake design. It is hard to get to the filter for service, you have to modify the car to install it, and it levees the engine bay looking like there is something missing. Most people do not service the filter because of the PIA it is to do. The benefit of having the intake is lost driving with the dirty filter. You are better off with a K&N in the stock air box, it's safer and it is about the same in performance.
I am going to have about a half dozen intakes built by mid summer. I will be looking to install them in test cars I will be looking for feedback on the overall experience with the intake.
I am working on the finishing touches of the new lid before I start production.
