Get an AP2 motor when you have the chance. Much stronger valve train and more power.
I'm guessing I'd need more than just the motor for an AP2 swap. ECU? What else?

This is a project I could do myself if I had time (once did a full teardown and rebuild of a Miata that had a 1.8L swap into a 1.6L car) but time is a luxury right now. So I'd need a competent shop to handle an AP2 swap as well.

check out the shop Turbo Toys. Guy named Jim there. He buys salvage cars from auctions and parts 'em out.
I appreciate the tip. Where are they located?

seems kinda expensive just for a shortblock
That was my thought too. A quick search here found short blocks offered in the past for much less. Unless there is something special about this one; 0 miles, rebuilt for boost or ???

He said a new shortblock, so I'd take that to mean a new OEM shortblock.

I missed the "new" part of the post. Time to clean my reading glasses!

I'm lookng for something rather cheaper than that. I'd like parts and labor to be that price or less.

from what i understand, which isn't much, putting an AP2 motor in an AP1 isn't all that bad. I know Billman250 has done it time and time again, and he keeps and uses the AP1 ECU.

I'd be wary of using the Ap1 ecu, you don't know how the life of the motor will be decreased revving to 9krpm vs. the limit on the ap2 ecu.
