Where to Stay in Key West?
I know someone has a recommendation for this.
I was thinking about going down to Key West for vacation and wanted to know if anyone has a favorite spot. Looking for:
* close to downtown
* not a hotel (something more cozy)
* no bathroom sharing (some B&Bs do that down there
)
* secure parking for the S
Looking for sometime in June. Any times I should avoid (gay pride weekend, straight pride weekend, etc.)
Thanks!

There are tons of B&B's down there but I've never actually stayed down there (my dad has a place in Marathon so I stay up there and drive down) so I couldn't recommened one or the other. If you are willing to stay in a hotel La Concha is really nice, right on Duval and has one of the best places in town to watch the sunset. As far as events go the big ones I believe are the powerboat races, the theater festival and the Cuban-American Heritage Festival (the worlds largest conga line dances down Duval St.). School will just be letting out though so be prepared for all the tourists and RV's you can handle.
Just don't stay at Atlantic Shores near the Southern Most Point if you're looking to avoid the rainbow action. Nice place but the sun deck is clothing optional. Heard it's fun around spring break. Unfortunately, I wasn't there during that time. It's one thing to get hit on. It's another thing to get hit on by a naked dude with piercing in the oddest places. YIKES!
Not sure of any B&Bs. My wife and I are going down there later in the year and probably stay at the Hyatt near the main square. It's a blast though.
Don't forget to toast the sunset!

We like the Ocean Key Resort at the end of Duval - right on the water. Secure parking, nice rooms, and the bar outside is THE place for the sunsets. Been only a couple of times, but I'd stay there again.
Try Bananas Foster, The Curry Inn, Key Lime Inn, Also the Artist House, I have stayed in all and are great in their own way. All are B&Bs and you don't have to share a bathroom. Most are within a couple of blocks from Duval.

The Paradise Inn on Simonton is also very nice...and there's lots of major hotels too everything is close..I like the small places better...i can stay in a hilton anywhere.
Best thing i would recomend is go to www.keywest.com and look at what things are going on that week , most of the small hotels and b&bs are listed on there with virtual tours and they'll tell you what their clientele is.
Because you're there in the summer....go without a reservation...and just go walking...and pick one...that way you get a walk in rate which is usually less than reservations.
If you any other questions PM me i've lived in and out of key west since...damn before buffett ...theres lots to do there...you'll have a good time...Green Parrots is the best bar for tunes.
