Sorry to read your story. That's aweful.

I suspect your mileage/driving had nothing to do with the failed rear diff. Honda says to change the oil there after every 30k miles. Chances are, it was never done before you bought the car.

Knowing my luck, they will tell me its my fault. If its never been changed, is that what causes the sludge?

Whoa there. You got the car with an effective warantee. The dealer therefore released it to you without known problems. Fact is, your rear diff is shot. You saw oil all over the rear of the car. That's not sludge. That's a leak. Not sure why. I would guess that 'sludge' would be too thick to leak out of a properly sealed rear diff. That said, ther may be cruddy oil left in the rear, but I would strongly argue the car was not maintained according to Honda specs prior to your purchase.

I hope the warranty works for you.

If not, I have a used diff. MY01 20xxx miles.
This could save you some serious cash! Hopefully warrenty comes through and they cut you a check for a new diff. Then you can get this one for a fair price and pocket the remainder!

Good luck again.

Still haven't heard. I called the shop yesterday and they said they have been swamped. They said they were going to take it apart today and contact the warranty people to set up an appt, that they would let me know. I reminded him I'm in a rental car, and he said we'll do our best, "i think they give you a day in a rental per 4 hours of labor." Ummm This is not going to help with the week before they've even looked at it, or if they even decide to pay for it. Im going crazy.

Does anyone know the approx labor times for a rear diff replacement?
