Importing a car from the UK??
First off.. what they hey happened to S2ki?? I'm gone for two weeks and the site changes to mirror corporate doldrums and government gray.. blah!
Anywho, does anyone have experience with importing a car from abroad for non-road use (well, it might see the freeways..)?? I have the line on a smashingly cheery Pulsar GTiR from Southampton. The shipping rate is a fair 700 pounds (enclosed container) and the US Duty is 2.5% of the purchase price (about $175). If I can get the car registered here, perfect.. if not, and it has to remain off-road, race only.. that's fine too. I need some help on clearing customs, if anyone has gone through this process before.
Calling the staff at NHTSA, EPA division, is pointless. It's an all too familiar lesson automated mayhem, just a downward spiral of pointless babblings and mindless transfers. The crew at DOT is out to lunch, permanently.. I can't get a response from them either. What I gathered, a simple HS-7 form is all that is required and your good faith and "honest" word the car will remain shackled to publicless tarmac.
Any help is greatly appreciated..
BTW, I ran a 33.4 at Andretti's Speedlab - Wahooo!!

Right on.. Carolyn Williams from the EPA called me back. She'll be faxing some forms over and mentioned the approval process takes about 10 days.. since the car is for racing, it doesnt need EPA or other DOT (bumper, headlights, etc) certif. After getting the car titled I can keep it as long as I want. Supposably of course.. purely speculation. I'll know more later.
If I had known that.. R32 Skylines are only 17K from Japan.. the $ is killing the yen at 130 right now.

Tom - thanks for the input. Since I have my racing license, it makes it extremely easy. The toughest part seems to be getting the exclusion letters from the GA DMV and Fed DOT. I'll visit the DMV personally and hope for the best with the DOT. Once I get those two, I'll get approval from the EPA and the car will be on shore in 7 days.

I'll be down there again today - after 4hrs at the DMV, they put the wrong VIN on my letter!
Anywho, the car was approved by the Feds and the state of Georgia - so it'll be here in a few weeks. Too bad you don't have the Elise - I'd be curious as to who would win
Your's is much prettier though -

Tom - I pulled this from a known UK GTiR site for reference.. I can't edit HTML, this is the best I could do. Lots of scrolling involved..
