Silverstreak, I thought that too but after reading the manual to the T6400 it says that the (1 Watt) 5 mile range IS available on FRS channels 1-9 channels 10-14 are back to the 1/2 W output. We need to test them out though. Also, the T6400 has additional 1W channels that can be used with other GMRS radios like the Motorola Spirit radio.

Guys,
Here is what the manual that comes with the devices says. Channels 1-7 GMRS and FRS = 1 watt. Channels 8-14 = FRS 8-14 are 0.5 watt and channels 15-22 = GMRS Primary 1-8 are 1 Watt. So if you are using channels 1-7 FRS you get 5 miles and if you use channels 8-14 you get 2 miles. If you want to use channels 15-22 you are supposed to obtain an FCC licensce. Another cool feature of the T6400 is that you can set scrambling on the signal also. You have the choice of 3 different scramble modes. I imagine that you have to have another T6400 to talk to though.

Shiite, since we use 4-20 on runs and 3-20 on S2kCA, if we can get 5miles on that bizzanitch, I am going to upgrade!
Dave please confirm this info with your techs before I go buy this.

This From MOTOROLA:
Go the distance with this combination GMRS/FRS two-way radio. The T6400 two-way radio provides one watt of power on its GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) channels enabling communications at a range of up to 5 miles (Range will vary based on terrain and conditions). Power is automatically stepped down to 0.5 watt across its FRS only (Family Radio Service) channels enabling it to talk to all existing FRS two-way radios. (FRS channels provide a range of up to 2 miles. Range will vary based on terrain and conditions). http://commerce.motorola.com/cgi-bin/ncomm...lkaline%20Radio
