From what I understand, the problem with HD HTPC's is that the various sources (DriecTV, Comcast, etc) use slightly different encoding so you have to use their equipment to record the signal.

The over-the-air HD content, which is pretty much just your local stations, can be recorded by pretty much anything which is good but that is like 1/100th of the stuff I would actually want to record.

So, unless the providers start to make nice-nice (), we are never going to be able to record using our own stuff.

Those drives have had tons of problems, search google for them. I wouldn't touch them.
