The best way to start is by just buying a couple of shares of some good stocks that you did research on. This is where I am... I'm still learning how to do that homework. There is A LOT involved but ANYONE can do it. That is the great thing about the internet.
I am almost at the point where I am going to start a paper portfolio. I'm going to find some stock and pretend to buy a couple shares of each and see how they do. What I am reading suggests that you should be willing to spend an hour a week doing homework on each stock you own. You have to know EVERYTHING about the company, what they make, who your fellow investors are, and how the sector they are in is performing. It may sound daunting but it really isn't all that hard given how much info is out on the web now.
