At Wintergreen I had a very similar day, patchy areas with no snow, or fastly melting snow. Coming down Eagle run, I think, nice snow at the top, just a t-shirt on at the time, early am, about halfway down, made a hard turn to miss some bare patches, then one ski caught a rock and the look binding popped.... I was still skiing on one ski and the other ski was hauling ass towards the bottom.... My cousins were in the lift on the way up and started yelling Loose Ski as loud as they could. Then my other cousin started yelling Loose Skier, loose skier. I think I accelerated to about 75 mph riding the edge at a 45 to the slope.... decided it best to bite what snow remained instead of the trees... dislocated thumb was only serious injury... But got plenty of Ski Lodge sympathy from snow bunnies... that and alcohol made it all better...

maybe that is why the snow was melting...
