This is crazy talk. But I do suppose it's nice to have quality pics. But holy moly... that's some serious loot for some serious gizmo's.
Think of it like modding your car ... Does that JDM bumper from Mugen for $2K really make a difference? Or can you really get away with the OEM bumper, which is "free" with the car.

The nice thing is, lenses hold their value really well and for a long time ... Lenses aren't like computer technology where after a year its almost worthless. Sometimes older lenses are even more sought after and go up in value ... Plus with digital you can take unlimited amounts of pictures and then go back later and keep the ones you really want.

But like any hobby, it can get ridiculously expensive.

I think I have too many expensive hobbies (modding cars, photography, computers, video games). I need to find a cheap or free one hahaha ...

There were certainly some strange looks...

I was shooting at 16mm, so actually your 12-24 would be great in this setting @ 12mm... (with the crop factor of the camera's sensor I was getting a standard equivilent 26mm shot, you'll be getting about 19mm).

Speaking of which, if you have a canon film body, shoot some pictures with these lenses - especially the wide-angles - on the film body to see just how much you're losing with the crop and the characteristics of that wider field of view.

film wtf is that - that's like those CD things that I don't use anymore either.

I think you guys have talked me into getting the XT with the 17-85mm then building the lens arsenal a step at a time. I'm the kind of person who likes to get everything at once though - too bad my other projects need money too

On second thought - if you all were buying your first SLR and had $1500 to play with right off the bat what would you get?

No 20D LiQiCe - I've used Carlo's 20D a few times, but really like the size of the XT. The 20D or nicer could be in the future though

Funny Dave

I picked up the Silver Body XT at the employee price from Best Buy today. It came with the 18-55mm kit lens and I can already tell it is time for something better. In the 70 or so shots I've taken today I can also tell that IS is where its at for handholding, and the L series lens are probably the best way to go.........this is going to be expensive.

Before anyone asks "why the Silver body" - I wanted it. I foresee myself getting a another (bigger) camera body down the road and keeping the XT as backup, so some color coordination was in order

Compared to my Sony DSC-F717 the picture quality is on par with the kit lens, but jebebus this thing is fast! Can't wait to start playing with action shots. Another thing I absolutely love is manual focus. It was a pain in the butt with the DSC-F717 to find a decent focus spot - I would think I was honing in one thing (like a macro shot) and it seemed like I got it on the camera playback, but no - I usually wound up with the background in better focus than the foreground - not an issue anymore

SLR is where its at

Congrats on the new camera ... Yeah the 18-55mm lens is a pretty crappy lens overall, but its reasonably good as a starter lens. You can always eBay it for around $70-100 once you get a better lens.
