II Renovation Begins II
Apologies to Chris, but here goes...finally got around to remodeling the first floor in the house. New kitchen, hardwood floors and half bath gutting.
Here are the first round of pics....

half bath before

sideways pic (sry) half bath before

half bath before--small room, hard to photograph

Drywall off, hmm why is it so dirty at the base of the studs, need further investigation

BIRDS!! BIRDS!! BIRDS!! 8 dead ones in my walls. Down to their skeletons, but no fun to clean up.

More removal of drywall--the previous owners had texture painted and the drywall could not be saved.
Notice the "bird dirt" at the base of the wall.

Boston market, anyone?

Drywall all gone, except for...

The ceiling...more horrors up there. Apparently the birds got into the wall cavity through the bathroom vent. Then they set up shop for a while, built a nest, and commited aviancide in my walls.

*Wife* is the power off? *me" yep. Zap. Now I used to do electrical work, but I was not ready for this circuit to have reverse polarity. If you have not shorted out a circuit onto sheet metal, try it one day, its enlightening.

entry way prepped and ready to be tiled.

kitchen before

Kitchen getting top cabinets out

Hardwood floor held on by herculean glue. This took most of the weekend to get half of the floor out
The glue is so bad (good?) that it is actually taking up some of the plywood with the old floor in spots. I have to replace some rotted plywood by the door, so I will fix this when the new plywood goes down.

Still working on the floor--new floor in the back.
More updates to come....

Cabinets came today, here is a sample:

This is the "media center" basically a glorified mailbox, but it keeps your keys and things out of site.

Closeup of the detail of the cabinet doors

Where the S used to live, now cabinet boxland

The next two pics show the rot by the door--really minimal from other floors I have seen

Hit our first replan tonight, this is the ceiling in the bathroom. The wall is a load bearing wall and the joists are lapped on top of it. This is where the pocket door was going to go. It can be done here, but headers, supporting the roof and things of the like would be necessary to accomplish the original plan. Considering the very real danger of collapsing the house, we decided to go with a traditional door instead.
Appliances we are installing:

Hardwood flooring:

Countertops--color is ubatuba, but I am having difficulty finding a good photo representation of the granite.

Best instructions EVAR!! Seriously, how much would it cost to hire a proofreader for these things? Here is a sample of the butchering of the English language presented on these directions:
"Before preceding the installation of the mixer it is necessary to clean the piping in a way to eliminate eventual silts, moreover it is suggested to put the stop cocks with filter." and "For keeping the beauty of the surface of the mixer for long time, please dont use acid or abrasive detergents or abrasive, becasue they could damage definitely the surfaces." and the best one "For take away dirty use water and soap or natural detergent."

Had very little tolerance for this high hat in the ceiling. On the left is a HVAC duct and on the right is the joist.
Sometimes, recessed lighting, even when planned thoroughly can still be a major pain in the ass. You can see the original high hat location on the left, where I ran into the duct. I moved it over to clear the duct only to run into a damn duct hangar.
All four original light locations had to be moved. Usually I can at least get one or two to drop with no problems.Recessed lighting done.
The whole in the middle is the original light location.Same as above, different angle and exposure.
