I got a pair of the padded/lined MTB shorts this past weekend. Wore them for my ride on Monday. Good stuff

I also have a pair of the typical spandex w/padding which I've worn as well. Basically the same, but if you really want to you can wear regular shorts over them. I've done it both ways. You do feel goofy, but you get over it.

I've got some road gloves... would my mechanics gloves work fine or should I look at some dedicated MTB gloves?

the padding in the mtb/road gloves makes a big difference after a ride IMO. I have some full fingered padded MTB gloves and they rock

Yeah I think for $20 I'll get a pair of the Pearl Izumi gloves.

lol or thin kids Although I'm sure I could do a 32 if it's spandex. However, I'll just wear regular cargo shorts
