I've seen stories about blowing the competition off the line, but are there any good downshifting/passing stories out there.

I got behind this Miata the other day and we came up on some slow traffic. When safety allowed we both pulled out to pass at the same time. We leisurely went around the two other cars. I was doing about 75MPH in 5th as he pulled back in when I decided to take the Miata as well. I threw the Stook into 3rd to wake up the VTEC and left them all sitting there. I love this car.

Out of curiousity what limits do you set on downshifting? For example: When will you go into 4th instead of 3rd? 75MPH? 85MPH?

Previous daily driver: Mazda 323 GTX, fun but not nearly the performance.

Commute: along straight two lane roads through farmland.

Old passing technique around 55 mph drivers: Downshift two gears, floor it and pass. Max speed around a few cars is about 75 mph.

First pass in S2K along same roads (funny, I was passing a Miata too, both of us with top down): Bud from work in car with me, I downshift two gears to pass Miata, another car and a truck. I downshift two gear and floor it, I wasn't in VTEC but close. Both heads in Miata snap to the left to see what's passing them. They pull out behind me. By the time I pull back into the lane infront of the truck, we're doing 95mph. Smiled all the way thru lunch.
