Dynaudio 3 way set up
I wanted to let folks know about the system I'm putting in the S2000. I've done lots of research, so others may benefit. I don't want a sub in the back. I looked into under dash approaches, but while they might thump ok, they don't go that low in frequency and/or require cutting metal, Etc.
I'm going with Dynaudio 340 3 way set. The advantages of this system are that it can be played fairly loud and will sound good at those volumes. These can be found less than full retail on ebay or at http://www.acaraudio.com/default.php
I'm putting the 7" in the doors. I'm sealing the doors up really well with Cascade products. I'll use a reflex pad in each door also. These will go fairly low in a sealed door. The 8" would be nice, but I don't think it will fit.
The mid in these 3 way system is only about 3" and not very deep. This will go in the existing kick panels, with only the cutting of a hole and mild building up needed. The crossover will go at the back of the same kick panel. There's an existing hole in the metal that can be used to partially rest the magnet in, with a reflex pad behind it. Lot's of wires on the drivers side to avoid messing up.
I'm running Kimber Kable from the crossovers into the doors. That's pretty thick stuff, so this should be the hardest part.
For the amp I'm using the Audison LRx2.250. It puts out about 12 watts to each channel at 12 volts, of very clean and clear signal. This amp is so small that it will fit by the gas tank and has its own cooling fans. Hard to find good deals on this. It can be had at http://www.procarstereo.com/index.jsp for a bit less than at a retail shop, but I think I'll go with a local shop for the ease of service and known trustworthiness.
I already have a good Clarion headunit.
If the factory headrest speakers can't keep up with the new system, I've found small replacements available at Madisound.com Madisound can save you a bit of money by piecing together Morel components with custom build crossovers.
This system is costing more than I wanted to spend, but it's the most viable non subwoofer approach that I could find that would sound good, play loud, and be stealthy. The nice thing about these speakers is that they haven't changed much over the years and can last a long time.

Before spending your money on a subenclosure system, look into sealing up your doors and getting really good speakers like the Dynaudio's I have. They sound so very good and the bass response is much better than I expected. It's not like having a 12" in the trunk, but then again, I don't have to listen to rattles either. They sound better than focal speakers. I hate the Mbquarts in my other car in comparison.
Although you have massive balleriffic equipment, Im not sure if its a typo or not, but you have a 12watt amp pushing the dynaudios??? Or did you mean 120? If 120, im sure you have on hell of a system. However, this thread, by law of s2ki, is useless without pics.
My mistake. It's 120 watts into each of 2 channels, audison LRX amp.
I'm really trying to preach the benefits of the dynaudios. For the money folks put in enclosure, subwoofer, and 4 channel amps, they could have a 2 way dynaudio system with a jlaudio amp.
Everyone says the speakers they have sound the best. I haven't heard anything better in a car.

Let me clarify a few things. No one here who knows anything about car audio will deny Dynaudio. They are spectacular speakers. The best? No. Great? yes.
Now, no matter what speaker you buy, no matter how much it costs, they can never reproduce low frequencies like a dedicated subwoofer. There is no debate here....its the way it is.
Now, when we all say...this speaker is the best, that speaker is the best, we are talking about at a certain price bracket. Putting 1500 dollar rainbows into an s2000 is a waste of money, no matter how you cut it.
Now, you are lucky to have such great components. But remember, Dynaudio speakers go for over 800 a pair. This is what some peoples entire setup costs. So saying that this is the best 2500 dollars spent, is a false statement.
You have a great system, but it WILL sound better with a dedicated subwoofer. No question about it. Also, there is more to systems that just components. It is the way they come together and setup that provides true harmonic bliss.
Ive have been around systems with A level products, that didnt sound as good as C level products.
So enjoy what you have gotten, and remember, there is ALWAYS something better, but your ears are the only ones that count.

A 2 way set up of Dynaudios can be had for about $500 online. This cost can be offset by not having to buy a box, sub, and by using a 2 channel rather than 4 channel amp.
There may be better speakers out there, but I haven't heard them. The dynaudios sound great, play loud, and are small enough to fit in our cars. I considered focal, but they cost just as much, and won't fit in the kick panels like dynaudio or morel.
While a sub can play lower than the set up I have now, most sub set ups that folks use in the S2000 don't play much lower (i.e. JLAudio stealthbox). You also have to listen to rattles. The rattles just ruined the sound for me. I also felt that I had to shake the whole street before I could get the bass in to the cabin. The weight savings is another consideration. I think the bass I have is better than putting a small Jl enclosure or focal enclosure under the dash.
What I can't convince you of without listening for yourself, is that by sealing up the doors and having speakers with good bass response (dynaudio, or Focal K2P to a lessor extent), I have much better bass than you might realize. With some metal cutting the 8" woofers could be installed.
Some people want serious bass. My installer is one of those. Most of us want bass to make the music sound better. For folks like me, I'm advocating that they consider first sealing up the doors (becomes the enclosure) and getting better speakers. The overall sound quality is better than a system with massive bass but average speakers up front, and the bass is much better than I ever expected.
