I'm a masters student in a graphics oriented field (advertising) where the Mac is god. For the last two years, I've bucked the system and used the same programs on PC with no problems. I have access to top tier PC products and keep my PC updated essentially for free (processors, memory, etc). I've always said that macs don't make so much difference anymore as long as you've got a fast PC.

This semester, I've finally started working in the lab at school because it has a better, more sharing "vibe". The lab is equipped with G5's, and I'll be damned if I don't like working on a Mac waaaaaayyyyyy better than a PC. It just works better (yeah, can someone explain that to me??).

So, of course, I start researching mac prices. I'd have better luck selling my 1st born than affording a good G5! To get a top of the line G5 runs somewhere in the realm of $3k+ not including a monitor. Is it just because they can (yes, I understand the theories behind marketing and economics), or is there some reason for it behind their technology?

 

Yeah, they are expensive. I don't know why. I wish they were cheaper too. I guess they can do this because if you want to use a Mac and are a power user, you must get the PowerMac.

 

mac is stable with graphics developement. but their processor is base on risc architecture.


mac are expensive because they're the only one with mac and that they have better exterior design. but mac sucks when it comes to daily computer use.

i kno. i'm a mac admin for my college. and it sucks when it comes to simple task. and 1 mouse button is such a biatch.

 

Unless your "daily computer use" is graphics work. Example: I spent about six hours doing just graphics work today.

Besides, what simple tasks do you need to do that a mac can't handle? Word for mac works fine. Internet access is easy. Burning CD's is easier on a mac than PC in my experience.

The only thing that I really like more about PC is the ability to size a window to the whole screen easily without the toolbar overlapping the edge of your workspace.

Economics is a PITA. More companies need to offer student deals (and I mean GOOD deals). If Mac sold to students cheap and got them hooked for life, they'd make more money in the long run probably by keeping us as customers. As it stands now, I'm not buying one even though I'm the exact type of person that "needs" one. Same goes for Adobe software (the difference being that there are other ways to acquire it).

A high end Dell Precision Workstation can run $4500 and up. Not exactly cheap compared to the Mac price you quoted. What kind of PC are you comparing to a G5?

Why so defensive? I'm not putting down YOUR PC, I'm simply saying that I've really noticed a difference when it comes to graphics applications.

 

Yeah, I'm sure there are PC's that cost as much as a Mac. Maybe I'm just jaded since I get a good deal on my PC stuff. I was just disappointed that Macs are so expensive.
