Why are Macs so damn expensive?
I think the only reason s2000boi hates macs is he doesn't know his way around the enviroment as well and doesn't know the shortcuts... my computer never lags, never hesitates between running 10 graphics programs ( a lil exxageration but you get my point) and switching back and forth. There is a reason Macs are industry standard in the design field... my job, my career depends on that.
I use to hate Macs when I first got into my field when in college.. but once you really get a feel for the enviroment and know your way around.. they only keep getting better with each new version of OSX... I still hate OS9 if its any consolation
Hey while I have the mac users' attention, I need a weird favor to ask. Can one of you with a powerbook and/or ibook take off one of the keys and take a pretty close-up few of the underside of the key, and the mechanism on the keyboard itself? Thanks!

not my fiber optic backlit keys you want me to decimate!
Let me shed a little light on this. I use both, both at home and the office. Guess what? The mac is faster. Guess what? The Mac is easier to use. Guess what? Anyone that tells you other wise is lying. I'm sorry for being blunt because many PC users are just scared or ignorant. I used to be one of those people, and thought that only "special people" use macs because they couldn't hack PCs.
I sell both. I'm an authorized apple dealer as well and hp/compaq. (Don't bring up the Dell stuff, because they are garbage)
We can't keep the Apple's in stock. We've sold 100s of apple Xserves and Xserve RAIDs to the goverment because under their tests nothing comes close to them for the price. They are simply faster and more stable and better built than any other server out there. They are even replacing the 500 and 700 series Hp/Compaq Proliants that were deemed bullet proof.
Why does this matter? Well apple puts the same know-how into all the products they design. Their hardware and componets are the best they can get their hands on. The software (OSX) is unmatched. The complex winblows kernal will never be as fast or efficient as the unix base of OSX. Everytime Microsoft comes out with a new OS they try to re-invent the wheel. The Apple OS is an OS that 18 years of evolution has produced.
Let's talk processors. RISC vs. CISC. The apple processor is faster. It requires less operations to do the same thing. You can have your 3.4ghz extreme Pentiums. Those big, hot processors loaded with self-correcting errors just are slowing themselves down. Coupled with an OS that just as inefficient is a equation for disaster. (Exaggeration) Intel has done a great job with marketing and getting their chips into a majority of most machines when in fact they produce the slowest chips on the market. Both Apple/IBM, AMD are faster. It's all marketing, the uneducated consumer buys intel because intel has become a widely known name. You see Intel ads everywhere. When is the last time you saw an AMD ad outside a computer publication?
The apple consumer plays a big part in this. Why you ask? Because Steve Jobs knows whatever he produces, his public will buy it. Mac users tend to always have the latest and greatest of the crop. In a survey that I've taken while talking to my customers. The average apple consumer doesn't mind paying for the product because they know the money will go directly back into R&D to make even better products.
This is the opinion of a person that uses both daily and objectively. There are some applications that I have to use the PC for, but if they made them for a mac, I would use the Mac.
People say you are part of a small faction of a Computer users. I say we are elitests. PCs people say you are only 2% of the computer market. I say I like being part of the top 2%.
Side note: The average mark up on a PC is 5-8%, the mark up on apples are 8-11%. Apple also offers huge education and government discounts.
