Default Rear speakers - best way to ensure cut is good

Hi

I am in the UK, and about to install some Polk 4" components, Lucid style, into the rear panels behind the seats. The magnet on the 4" mid range is 3 1/8" diam, so positioning of the circular cut into the rear panel is critical.

Anyone have any advice on how to ensure the cut is in the correct place to ensure that the speaker fits throgh the metal space behind the panel?

Thanks in advance for your help

Best wishes

Ian

Ian,

You might try emailing Lucid for help - tho he may want you to buy his ready-cut panels...

Good luck and let me know how you get on?

I've just finished installing the OEM 6.5" speakers in the rear panel. Remove the panel and test fit the speaker in the slot with it as flush as possible with the panel surface. Put a piece of masking tape on the carpeted area below the panel and draw a straight horizontal line and measure from the line to the center of the speaker. Then measure from the edge of the panel opening to the center of the speaker. Remove the speaker, replace the panel and measure using the numbers you just got. You should be almost dead on for the center of your hole. Now draw the circle on the panel that has been covered with masking tape. Cut out circle.

Brilliant - many thanks xviper, just what I needed.

I see you are in Calgary - I visit every few months (I am in the oil industry) - I have noticed that it gets a little chilly there - how do you get on with the stook in the snow and ice?

I have the same speakers mounted. The fit is a bit tight. What I did was the following...

Held the speaker in place with the panel installed. The coil does not nessesarly need to clear the metal, but the speaker frame does does. Ensuring the coil clearing will accomplish both.

Held the template over the speaker and the clip.

Marked the clip location relative to the holes.

removed the speaker and checked the dimensions again.

taped the template over the back of the opposite panel.

cut with a dremel or hot knife.

temporarily mount the speaker. trim to allow a flush fit.

mirror on the other side.
I ran into a clearance problem with the screws. I solved that by cutting. Don't be too hasty when cutting the screws though. The cover is keyed and I mounted both grill mounts off. Since the screws were already cut, I had to modify the grill instead.

I now have a hardtop, separate set of wheels and snow tires on all fours plus a block heater. I drive all winter. No problem. The heater's great, too.

I do NOT use screws to hold the speakers onto the plastic panel.

I removed the panels and made identically sized templates from stiif card.

did all my cutting, fixing and testing with the card (unexpectadly got it right first time). Then i use the card as a template for cutting the real panels.

fits like a glove!
