Holy freaking cow! Good thing I have a cable modem to pull up this thread. Awesome; things to ponder for my S2000; That first air intake seems to be placed at the hotspot of the engine.

OK, here's the deal with the intake.. soemone else at the show asked the same question.. The air gets super heated anyways, Dereck (sp?) said that the external temp was around 600 degrees celcius during normal operation (which is relatively cold apparently.)
Anyways, the incoming air has to pass through this area anyways and it gets super heated at this point. What I am trying to say here is it doesn't matter where the intake is because it's going to get hot as hell anyways. After the turbo it gets cooled in the intercooler which brings the temp down to a couple degrees from ambient temp.
