Default Chrome around centre console tarnishing..

I remember a DIY on how to fix this issue, but I can't seem to find the thread after much searching. Is there a way to fix this chrome issue around my center console/shift boot area? It looks like the chrome is dulling in some spots bad/tarnishing. Something tells me nail polish remover would fix this, but i'm kind of unsure if that was the product people used to fix this.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

I used alcohol to remove mine and it looks great. It's got a darker finish

I took mine out and hit it with a very light polish and cotton rag to remove the finish completely and it was a high-gloss chrome look underneath. I really dig it... You can see it in this photo:

I'm pretty sure that part is PLASTIC, not chrome, Do NOT use ACETONE (i.e. Fingernail polish remover) It will MELT.
I actually used a 3M kitchen sponge (scrubby side) to do mine on my MY00

Yes, it's definitely plastic. Acetone would be bad.
I didn't realize rubbing alcohol would remove it.
I used a very light paint polish and a rag and it just took some effort, but did the job.
It helps to actually remove that piece from the rest of the console, which is a fragile process.
