Default INJEN and AEM Shootout Complete!!!!!

Well, we got our test pieces in today and strapped the car on the dyno. Results were interesting. First, background on the car. It is equipped with Spoon header and N1 Exhaust(with cat). Please bare with me as I am just trying to get all of this organized and have pics to post as well. Install on both is fairly easy with the hardest part being the removal of the bumper (if you consider that hard). Then, its just a matter of using a punch saw to remove some plastic for the tube to come through. Since the INJEN is a 1 piece, it is a bit more difficult, but the trick is to jack up the pass. side of the car about 12 inches, and snake the intake in from underneath. We did a baseline with the stock airbox, installed the AEM, 2 pulls, removed the AEM, installed the INJEN, 2 pulls, all in about 35 minutes!!!!! I have the data points from the runs and as soon as I can figure out how to post Excel charts, I will do so. Here is the data so far:
Stock Box Max HP 205.8 TQ 131.7
AEM from 3k Max HP 203.6 TQ 140.7
AEM from 3.5k MAX HP 210.4 TQ 140.1
INJEN from 3k MAX HP 212.1 TQ 144.3
INJEN from 3.5k MAX HP 210.2 TQ 139.5
So, avg the pulls and you get:
AEM Max HP 207 TQ 140.4
INJEN Max HP 211.2 TQ 141.9
WOW! And this on a static dyno. As I said, all runs were basically back to back with only time to swap out the intake from 1 to the other. Also, once the graphs are up, you will see the nice midrange gains.
Biggest Gains
INJEN @6300 15.1 HP
INJEN @3800 16.0 lb/ft TQ
AEM @6200 11.6 HP
AEM @3600 16.1 lb/ft TQ
More to come.......

You can feel the torque with the AEM
Well, you can feel the TQ increase with both of them. From the results, it seems as if both are very close, with a slight edge to the INJEN (maybe do to it being one piece).
Now, phototime.

Just curious, has anyone dyno'd the spoon and/or mugen intake systems? I've been a big AEM fan ever since I got the CAI on my prelude... and it looks like they are making very nice gains on the s2000!

Now I have to decide if I want to give Ingen a shot on my s2k or stick with good ole' AEM. Anyone have any experience with an Injen Intake?

David,

Thanks for the dyno posts!

I realize that the res is not that great, so if you want the graphs, shoot me an email.

Yep...maybe the Injen has a bit more power improvements because of the 1 piece construction, and the fact that the injen has less agressive bends on the intake tubing.

Just to clarify, what has to be cut in front to get air to the filter? Do I have to remove the fake brake duct on the passenger side?

How difficult is it to find the correct place to cut for the tube to get through the fender well?

Inquiring minds, and all that.

Tanq,
I would rate the install difficulty as about a 5 out of 10. Again, we removed the stock box, installed the AEM, removed it, installed the INJEN and dyno'd the car all within about 35 minutes. As for where to cut, it is not brain surgery and to be honest, the instructions that came with both were more adequate than I expected. I just got done reading over them...LOL. A punch saw is very effective for removing the plastic or even a box cutter will work. We used both. As for removing the plastic piece in front, it will only help get more air into the area around the filter. Also, there is a piece next to the radiator (perp to it) that you should cut out, too. The AEM is the easier of the two, since it is 2 piece, but as posted above, I think the more agressive bends (close to 90 degrees at one point) hamper airflow. I will be more than willing to talk someone through an install if they get into trouble while doing it. Thanks guys!

Not to denote your results at all but, I just have two things to say about how they were dyno'ed that may or may not effect what the dyno plots greatly.

First off, it looks like you dyno'ed both with the front bumper off...isn't this going to give the intake much more air than it would usually get??? Much cooler air as well???

Second off, it was my understanding that in order for a mod to really take full effect the computer needs to "learn" from the new mod and adjust setting accordingly...this usually takes 20 mintues of driving.

This is the only two things I see wrong and it may be nothing but, I just wanted to point it out...

On the other side of the coin...I can't wait till my AEM gets here later this week...thanks R&D for doing the test and getting me my AEM for a great price!
