Use Radio Shack relay for Amp Remote?
Hi,
I am finally going to get a 4-ch amp to drive the fronts and the rear spearkers. One of the side benefit that I was hoping to get from this is to enable the mute button. (I have PAC to JVC HU already. JVC does not have the mute lead-in.)
Question: do you think I can use the same scheme mentioned at few places that uses Radio Shack Reed Relay (part# 275-233) to the cell-phone mute, for controlling the Amp's remote signal wire?
If this works, then I don't mind the disadvantage of keeping the HU running while the amp is powered off and on for the mute.
Regards,
JL

Most amps are designed to be "turned on" by a low current signal from a head unit or other electronic output. I'd be surprised if it took more than a few milliamps to turn on an amp.
Goferit.

Thanks for the info.
The amp is Soundstream A4. The manual doesn't say what the load is on the remote line. I wasn't worried about blowing the relay when I test. I was more worried about frying it later inside the dash.
Anyway, I will just go for it as Modifry says and see how it works.

I installed a relay with the new amp. I had to use Radio Shack SPDT Miniature PC Relay #275-248A. The 275-233 had the "Normally Open" only and I needed "Normally Closed" for the Amp remote signal. (Duh!) The muting button is working now.
Thanks for your help.
