OMG THE NOISE is BACK!
hi, I have type of groaning noise or growling noise from my tranmission or engine area... and it appear to be there even though i had my new tranmission and new clutch replaced recently.
my 2003 s2000 with 36,000 KM, it happen since day 1 and finally got new tranmission and clutch replaced but still there...
It happens within the 2.8-3.2KRPM range, under what I consider to be 'float the pedal' conditions, meaning I'm not accelerating, nor letting the pedal up entirely, but 'floating' the gas pedal. I can almost modulate the noise now at certain speeds, all within the 2.8-3.2K RPM range.
it only happen when i am going down hill or straight flat road and it only happens at quarter throttle too.. but if i am going uphill no problem at all...
1st gear 2nd gear at 2.8-3.3rpm groan + buzz
4-5-6 gear at 2.8-3.3rpm speed 59km/h - 120km/h gargling + little bit of groan
can you guys let me know what is the problem? or is it normal.. i have my second 055 clutch replaced and also a new tranny..
should i ask the dealer for another 055 clutch? could it be my propftshaft ( the one connect from tranny to diff. )?
thanks!

Have you compared the noise in your car to another S2000? In this car you are actually sitting with the drivetrain and minimal sound insulation.. it is a noisy car when operating perfectly, and yours may be so do a comparison.

I just my first S a few days ago. Mine only has 26k on it.. I also have this noise. It's kinda hard to get used to. Thanks for the good info though.. I was kinda starting to think that I was doin something wrong.
If it's the clutch buzz, it's normal. Had it on my 01, replaced the clutch under the TSB, noise came back. Have it on my 04, never bothered to have it "fixed" because I'm certain it'll come back.
I think it kind of adds to the "rawness" of the mechanical aspect of this car now. The noise has kind of grown on me!

aside from the other stuff he talks about, the main reason I chimed in with my 2 cents is because he gave such a specific RPM range as being the only time he hears this. Incidently, those rpm's are inline with my own clutch buzz I have. Like Koala, I've just tuned it out and ignore it really. Its not harmful, and its nothing but a noise... *shrug*

onani, with all your various problem threads I've already lost track. I kind of remember you mentioned something about the dealership screwed up your transmission or clutch on installation or something like that. I wonder if it has anything to do with your current problem. Can you give us more details? I can ask my cousin working there (he briefly told me that your car was waiting for parts while I ordered my PCX clutch) but I guess others might be interested as well?
Regarding your noise, the said RPM range is where the engine/transmission produces the most vibration. Any noise-suppressing parts working sub-par will result in your symptom. Have you ruled out loose sound insulation? My brother's '02 miata had excessive tranny noise brand new. Turned out the bolts that hold the shift boots were not tight from the factory and excessive tranny noise entered into the cabin.
I test drove a '02 S2000 back in '03 and there was excessive tranny noise similar to what you described. I tend to think it was some sound insulation problem because the tranny noise was crisp, like when you hear it from underneath the car. I also test drove a '02 S2000 with only 5000km back in April. It also had some faint tranny whine which I thought was normal.
My '00 had a pretty bad clutch buzz when I bought it back in April. It's fixed last August with a PCX clutch (most likely from the same batch as yours
). The clutch buzz hasn't come back yet (haven't had any track lapping and autoX with the new clutch yet) but I can hear tranny whine with the right amount of lift on the gas.
I've listened to your video clip but can hardly make anything out of it because of background noise, exhaust noise, and/or recording quality. Have you compared the noise with any other S'es? Maybe we could arrange to have a ride in your car to hear it first-hand. I don't claim to be a sound expert but at least we can compare noise between our cars.
