Default Engine sputters, feels like it's missing or not getting fuel

This is strange, I just came to this board tonight after experiencing this off/on for about a week and found two other posts about it (links below)

I was hoping that we could consolodate efforts in one thread and get this nailed down...

Basically, what happens for me, is when I'm anywhere above about 5.2K rpm, I get a feeling from the engine that maybe it's not getting enough fuel or like maybe it's missing. Kinda of feels like it's chokeing and makes me physically rock back and forth in my seat. Now that I'm trying to describe it, it's almost like VTEC stops working and it goes back to normal, the sound changes back from a high raspy sound to a more tame one.

I am taking it in to a very trusted dealer on Monday, and will remove my Injen CAI with stock before doing so (so they can't blame it on that)

Some of the things I've noticed:
happens above 5.2K rpm
happens on cold engine (just after reaching 3 temp bars)
Happens on Warm engine (after driving 60+ miles on the highway)
Started happening after my spark plugs were replaced (from the Honda recall)
Engine is at 39K miles (thank god for extended warranty)
I have an Injen CAI, clean filter has not experianced rain or puddles)
I've used 91 or 92 Exxon or Chevron gas for the life of the car (that's all they sell around here)
Have had all scheduled mainenance

Last night I was out for a spin and I noticed that I was having V-TEC issues. When the car hit 6000rpm it would sputter a little and then at 7000rpm the V-TEC would finaly kick in. Any ideas what could be causing this? The only guess I have is that it could be related to that fact that I filled up at a station that I'm not familiar with, using a lower octane gas (92) than usual. I'll have it in at honda this weekend but I just wondered if anyone had any experience with the issue.

gernby responded:
It sounds like an oil pressure issue. VTEC won't engage unless the oil pressure is high enough. Have you checked your oil level? I've also heard of some people experiencing things like this up in the mountains (MAP related, I guess).

Hesitation in V-tec?
It just started this morning. Above 6k the car hesitates badly. Anyone have any idea what this could be?
Thanks,
Aaron

The first thing I would check is the MAP sensor. They seem to be prone to an intermittent 'sticking' failure, which results in exactly the symptoms you are describing.

Some people have had luck tapping on the MAP sensor with a screwdriver handle. I believe that this results in only a temporary fix, but may be useful to confirm the problem. If you search on 'MAP sensor', you should be able to find some of the old threads.

I had this problem and swapped out my MAP sensor for a new one that a friend had lying aroung (thanks, RT!). Problem cured. Then I talked my Honda dealer into getting me a new MAP sensor under warranty, and gave them the bad one in exchange.

Good luck,

Ted

ninedeep recently fixed the very same problem. PM him for his experience...but, if memory serves, his solution was same as Tedster (although for some reason I thought he used the phrase ECU sensor) <== mebe that's the MAP sensor??? Anyway, again, as a suggestion PM ninedeep...

Good Luck!

It is the MAP sensor. A search will give you plenty of data on it.

I think mine was a bad tank of gas. I burned a tank up today driving around at high rpms. Refilled it with some octane booster and it seems to be running fine.

thanks for the feedback,
I took it into the dealer yesterday and I wasn't able to reproduce the problem. I'll try again today.

this isn't something readily reproducible, but when it happens it happens bad. I'd say carry a video camera and film the dash when it happens.

Yes, this is difficult to reproduce. I was lucky that I was able to convince my service tech that I knew what I was talking about, and he went ahead and replace the MAP sensor under warranty without seeing it reproduced.

Good luck,

Ted

What is it worth to skip the ordeal of a dealer visit? It is easy to fix (temporarily) by rapping on the sensor and for less than $45 the internet parts places will deliver a new one to your door. IMO it is not worth the hassle of the dealer.
