Help me... is this trash?
Hey guys,
I've just gotten home after checking out a few S2000s. I've got quite a limited budget, so that's why I'm looking at cars that aren't necessarily in perfect shape. They aren't trash... at least as far as I can tell.
Anyway, one car I looked at had 75k miles on it, a couple tiny tears in the soft-top, and a small bit of rust on the battery-tie-down-bar. They were asking $16,500 for it.
KBB seems to make that seem reasonable, but I'm not sure. The tears look like they could easily be sewn up with black thread and forgotten about, but maybe not.
Does the price seem reasonable? What should I offer on it?

If you look harder you can do better than that. My budget is similar. If you don't care, you can find a car with a salvage history for cheap. A lot of them are rebuilt, pass inspection, etc.
What year is the S you were looking at?

as people on this board have said stay away from salvage titles because you never know whats wrong with the car even the owners could tell you. Even it was fix to perfect condition. the S depends on the frame and structural integrity of the body that if it's damage it'll never be the same S.
your best bet is to find a clean title MY00-01, maybe MY02-03 with alot of miles but CLEAN title.
G/L with your searching use these two threads when checking just in case.

Whoop... sorry, forgot to mention the year. It's a 2002.
The requirement of my parents is that it has a clean title. I'd agree with them that this is a good thing to have. All it takes is someone's goof-up in the past and the entire car's value drops dramatically, no matter how reliable and number of owners it has afterwards. I don't plan on selling the S2k I get anytime soon, but I will probably bid it farewell at some point.

Yeah, I've used carfax. When I was looking up the carfax report I went ahead and got that "unlimited" report option. Why not... it's only $5 bucks more.
I've been using craigslist, autotrader, and the local classifieds. I've made an offer on that car... which I don't really want to say yet, but it seemed reasonable.
I saw another S2000 recently... it's a 2003 model with 37k miles at a dealer which comes with a 6 month warranty. They're asking a rather steep $25k for it, seeing how they had an almost identical car three months ago that they asked $17.5k for... but if they manage to bring it down that far, I'll jump on it.

GO haggle at the dealership and use NADA.com. I'm sure if you mess around with them a bit they are willing to sell it for lower then what they are asking not to mention you'll have the warranty just in case something happens.
Man If only I had jump on the MY04 GPW that was in salem OR. less then 10xxx miles and under 22k. That friend is a good ass deal.
Oh try cars.com if you haven't yet.
