Hi everyone, I've been lurking around the forums for a while, but this weekend I finally got my very own s2000. She's an AP1 2000, Silverstone with a lot of miles, but in good shape (I hope). We made it back on a 3 hour road trip to bring her home, so I hope thats a sign of good things to come. Anyways, this has been a dream of mine since the car debuted, and its taken all this time, but I have finally managed to fit it into my life and I couldn't be happier. If anyone has advice on an experienced shop to have her looked at in the Western New York area, please post any leads for me as I would really like to have the car checked out properly. Well thanks for reading this and I'm sure I'll be posting and absorbing knowledge in the weeks months and... ahead.
I have certainly seen Billman mentioned on the forums and that would be ideal to have him be able to look it over for me. Gotta find someone a little closer to home for right now, but thanks for the suggestion.
New cars are always exciting! These cars are noted for their reliability if maintained properly (and many when abused).
The S2000 is very DIY friendly to the point even I can do most of it.
Assuming the car is running well -- and it seems to be: Standard "new-to-me" used car guidance is do change all the fluids (engine, gearbox, differential, coolant, hydraulics) for a zero-base maintenance baseline and then follow the schedule from that point. Follow the Owners Manual for prescribed engine, gearbox, and differential oils -- the differential requires GL5 hypoid gear oil for example. There are photo essays and videos here and elsewhere on the web. Can be done on a Saturday morning.
Valve adjustment and compression test. And new spark plugs while you're doing this. Another Saturday morning.
Beyond that tires, brakes, and alignment are things to check.
Wow, this is am incredible wealth of knowledge you guys are providing. I certainly have some homework to do. In the short term I am taking the car to my usual mechanic before I road trip out to get my new top, but going forward I would rather be learning about the car and doing as much myself as possible. Thank you everyone for all your advice and info!!!
