Default Just saying Hi from Pittsburgh

Hello everyone,

Just taking a moment to offer my formal hello. I've been doing lots of research on the site over the past few months, so I figured its time to join. I would like to say that there is a ridiculous amount of good information on this site and not much of white noise (trash-talking, putting others down, giving us newbs a hard time ) which is sometimes difficult to find in a car community.

Some background, I live and am originally from Pittsburgh, PA, 24 yrs old, and currently working as an industrial engineer. I've always enjoyed cars and currently own a 98 turbo D civic. I am by no means a car expert but I enjoy working on cars and don't mind attempting to install parts myself. For example, installed the turbo kit by myself and it turned out perfect, tried to change my shocks springs this summer and ended up twisting a bolt-head off and needing to take it to the mechanic

I am looking forward to moving on from the civic and getting a more sophisticated, and let's face it more fun, type of car. For the last few years I have been looking at the STI as my next vehicle, but I figured I'm young and should get an impractical (impractical compared to the STI) and fun type car while I can. I still love and respect the STI as a performance monster but I think I'll look into when I NEED 4 doors.

The s2000 is an amazing performance value. I will be looking for a used AP1 over the winter, seems like the best time to buy, and the colors that catch my eye are silverstone, berlina and gpw.

That just about sums it up for me, I look forward to spending more time researching s2000's on the site. I will definitely be looking into the "What to look for when buying" and "first owner" type threads.

But any other buying advice would be most appreciated!

Thanks!

JP

Welcome. I am originally from New Castle and, despite now living in Cleveland, still root for the black n gold. AP1s are a great value and you are correct in that the winter is a good time to buy (although there are also fewer for sale). Try to stick with MY02/03, as there are several minor improvements that make a big difference. The car has proved to be very reliable and relatively easy to mod, although its easy to spend lots of $ chasing a scant few seconds. Pittsburgh has a solid local group, I've met a few during some of our meets, so certainly get in touch with those guys in their regional forum. They will also be a good source for potential buys and info. Also use the sale forum here, as there is a steady stream of cars that come up. Finally, many people (including me) have had success using craigslist. You will find a lot of silverstone but fewer bb and even fewer gpw. Poke around the site, ask questions and good luck in your search.

Thanks 8 ball. Good to hear from a fellow Pittsburgher. It had to feel good living in cleveland this week after the victory ;-) Thanks for the heads up on the regional forums, I didn't even know they were down there!

Yeah I love the AP1 and originally I was looking exclusively at 02/03's, but I've started to mainly at low mileage, newest year, and lowest cost. Seems like the best strategy.

Thanks again for the welcome. Maybe I'll see you at a meet once I get the car and if you're ever back near the 'burgh.

Take Care!

The STI is an amazing car for the price, but the styling does not appeal to me at all. A performance monster as you said and for that I tip my hat to them. Good luck with your purchase what ever it may be.

Well everybody I got an S2K this past weekend! Couldn't be happier, except for the weather here. I think I can honestly say I've been detailing it in the garage more than I've been able to drive it!

Is a MY00 Silverstone with Black/Red interior, and has 42,2xx miles on it. I purchased the car off of Barn1303, who by the way is stand up guy and took really good care of the car. The car runs like a champ and has practically no blemishes considering the MY.

So here's another new excited S2K owner to the community!

Now it just needs to stop snowing around here so I can start enjoying the car. Also, spring can't come soon enough to autocross and REALLY learn how to drive the car!

Congrats, sounds like a nice car, great miles. Welcome to the club, officially. I just put mine to sleep for the winter, I feel your pain with the weather.

monroeville native here (transplanted to DC).

if i can give you one piece of advice, it is this. Shop for your S2K in DC. Its a disposable car culture, and the prices are absolutely unbeatable. try craigslist and autotrader.
