Looking at an 02 S2000.
Hey all. Glad I found this site as its been very informative for the info ive been looking for on S2000's. A little info about me...Recently in a accident in which my 05 RSX Type S was wrote off. Still in pain but atleast me and the other driver both walked away from the accident and it wasnt my fault. LOL Im gonna miss that car.
Anywho. At this point in my life I dont want to spend $30k plus (Canadian) on a car like I did with my RSX. So ive been looking at used S2000's as I think it would be a good replacement car. Definately no downsides that I can see over the RSX except age. Looking at an 02 S2000 with 92k kms (50k miles?) on it. Just wondering if their are any known issues or flaws with the car. Anything I should look for specific to an S2000?
Any help is appreciated.

Living with the S as a dd will be different than your RSX. Much smaller interior, more limited cargo space, probably higher insurance cost, noisier cabin. Assuming these trade-offs are OK, these cars have been very reliable. Stick w/MY02 and over, since they have glass rear windows (w/defroser, probably very helpful for you in particular). There have been some TSBs, most notably an issue known as 'clutch buzz', so you'll want to see if that is present or has been addressed. Stock tires aren't cheap, so consider that, plus if running stock, you will definately need a second set for the winter. The only other thing is engine oil levels, AP1s sometimes eat oil, so be sure to keep an eye on that. Good luck.
Thanks for the replies. Im sure I can live with the smaller interior and cargo space. We have a second vehicle anyways if I need more room for transporting something. Noiser cabin all depends on just how noisy. I know rag tops are always noiser but im sure I can tolerate it and I image its not that bad. Winter tires are a must where im at. Thats what was on my car at the time of collision and I expected high cost for new summers as my RSX-S was the same.
I didnt think they liked to consume oil though. Thats good to know even though I check oil religiously. LOL Atleast now I know oil consumption is normal or not a shocker atleast. My RSX-S never burnt a drop but others had similar oil consumption problems.
Ive been reading about the buzzing issue so ill definately keep my ears open for that when test driving. All in all though it seems like a solidly built car as most Honda's are, which is good to hear. Just always good to ask for advice from ppl that own the cars ahead of time so I know what to look/listen for.
Thanks again.

I'm in the same boat as you Unknown. Sorry to hear about you accident. Glad you came out ok. Well I've been looking at S2K for the past 6 months. I am looking at 02-03 Suzuka Blue or Silverstone Metallic. I live in so cal so there are more things to consider when looking for a good used S2K. I would recomend, if it is in you budget, looking for one with lower miles. Maybe in the high 20k low 30k miles. I've found several here in so cal. Also take it to a mechanic for an inspection. I was close to buying an 02 berlina black but found that it was involved in a front end crash that was not on the CarFax. Good thing I took it to a mechanic. Be cautious and shop around Just my advice. I am very picky about my cars and they have to be close to stock as possible. Good luck I hope you get a good one.

This is a very comprehensive checklist that a member put together a while back. Although it was designed with a new S pickup in mind, it also works very well in evaluating a used one. Also, don't be alarmed about the oil use, not all of them do it and if it does, it's not an issue unless it goes unchecked for a while.

Thanks guys.
In response to ///RS-2000, their are only 5 S2000's for sale that are within reasonable driving distance from where I live. That kinda makes things tough to shop around. Not to mention u rarely see S2000's driving around here. Very rare car. That being said, the 02 im looking at is stock with 92k kms for $17k. A similar but 03 with 30k kms is selling for $18k but has had some mods (intake, exhaust, debadging, springs/coilovers, possibly more) which deters me from that vehicle despite the better deal price vs age and mileage. The other three (two 03's from florida and an 06) are $27k or more which is more than I want to spend. I know these mileage and $ numbers probably dont mean much to u since were talking different currency and all but u can atleast get he jist of it I think.
So really I have the option between the stock 02 with 92k kms or a modded 03 with 30k kms and $1000 higher price. I feel the same as u when it comes to buying a car. I dont want it already modded. So thats really making me want the 02. And around here, the 02 is a good deal provided the car is good mechanically.
8_ball. Thanks for the link. Definately helpfull.

S2000's are cheap on insurance, and it's quiet for a cab, but it's a cab.
those mods are mild, and you can inturn go back to stock and sell the parts (maybe the owner has them).
You can also tell the 02 owner that an 03 with much less Km's is selling for 1000.00.
It will give you some buying power.
You won't be disappointed with the fun factor and performance this car will offer you, you will forget about the rsx-s in minutes on a nice warm day.
This car is just as reliable as your old one and there are cheap methods to reducing oil consumption (krank vents)

Im sure your right though about forgetting about the RSX-S. In fact, the only thing I think ill miss about my RSX-S are the heated seats and climate control. Other than that, an S2000 is an all around better car for sure.
