Looking at an 03 GPW
I've been planning on getting an 02-03 S2k for a few months now. I was originally going to wait until November (better deals in cold weather right?), but I found I private seller who is selling a 2003 GPW w/tan (one of my favorite colors) w/20k miles on it. According to him, the car has been maintained by one dealership and he has all the service history. All the car needs is the standard 22k maintinance. I'm going to look at the car tonight and take it for a test drive. I've already looked at some of the FAQ posts on S2ki and I'm going to take the check list for buying used with me. I have two questions.
1. If I can get all the service records on the car, do I need to do a pre or post buy inspection? (provided everything comes up good of course).
2. The owner is asking 22,300. If all is right with the car, is that a good price?
-Thanks
Also, can anyone help with a carfax or autocheck. The VIN is=JHMAP11433T007226

seems like a good price. Only a little less than what I paid for my 2001 w/ a honda certified warranty. BUt check www.edmunds.com or Kbb.com for a point of reference.
I had a look at the car tonight. It looks pretty good, but there are three problems.
One, it's late for an oil change. The owner was a nice guy, but I doubt he posted on this board. It seemed like he just used the car to tool around Hilton Head. I'm going to get it inspected, but should I be worried if it's more than 1,000 miles late on the oil change. It did have the proper filter. I've been that late once or twice on my 16 year old Accord and it still runs fine.
Two, he's got the original S-02 tires on the front. They still look good. The rears are new BFG g-force T/As. Decent tires, but they are 225s rather than 245s. I was planning on getting new tires (have the money saved up and all), but would this negatively affect the diff or suspension in any way?
Three, there is a minor ding in the front bumper where the guy hit a curb. I know a body shop that could fix it for about $200...not a huge deal.
Other than those three problems, the car was great. Test drove it in the rain and the top didn't leak. The defrost worked fine as did the A/C.
Advice, comments, and help are welcome.

I just checked with the dealer this morning. It turns out the car had an oil change on time after all! It also has full warranty until next february, so if something major goes wrong right after I buy it honda will hopefully fix it. I think I can pick it up by Saturday.

good luck with the sale
