paid 28k for 05 w/ 63 miles in feb

if 06's are going for less than 30k already, that may deserve a serious look.

Some good stuff on this in the Introductions Forum. Go look at the FAQ there. A new MY05 should probably come in under 30K, IMO.

Thanks again everyone. An Oregon dealer offered me $28.9 today on a new '05, red (after dest. and b4 TTL). I said no, and he sold it to another dealer.

We'll see what I can do. I'm going to aim for mid 28's before TTL. This dealer in California has 3 of them...again they bought it from another dealer. Not sure what they had in mind.

IMO, if you're around 29K (as you were with this dealer), you're doing well. Don't quibble over a few hundred, gabe... (well, that's my opinion).

Thank's Chazmo. I'm actually about 1,200 miles from that Oregon dealer so it was very unlikely that I would go to him. I just wanted to see what [the next closest dealer] who has new '05 sold them for. I'll be visiting Northern California next weekend, which is where my target dealership is. They've got 3 cars.

I'm not going to haggle over a few hundred....but I want it to be fair to both parties. I used a spreadsheet from cartips.com, plugged in the invoice for a new 2006. I put in my guess for the '06 dealer holdback (I assumed same % as it was in '05. All Intellichoice had was the '05 figure at $994. It lists the 2006 holdback at $30...I thought that was a typo. Please someone correct me if you know the true holdback...I'm assuming 3% of MSRP+destination for '06, which is $1,022.) I then backed out their profit from the deal (before TTL), which is $263. Total quote came back to $30,434 for the '06 before TTL (including destination). Using that logic, and backing $800 out of it (increase in invoice year over year), the new '05 I'm looking at would be $29.6 ASSUMING THE SAME PRICE STRUCTURE as the best quote I got for the '06. This is for a dealer very close to my target dealer, by the way, so it's highly relevant.

Now, I don't want to buy the 2005 at $29.6, because I wouldn't be getting any kind of deal for it having sat there for almost 2 years (and also relative to the deal on the '06 i was quoted...exact same price structure).

My end question is....how do I start the offer? Obviously (to me) it has to be below $29.6. Hear my logic out, and let me know if and how I'm flawed.

1. 2006 MSRP quote - Best is 30.4
2. 2005 Edmund Retail (used, excellent cond., 100 miles) - 28.8

Based on these figures, I'm implying that the car has gone down in value by $1.6k over the past model year. It's the difference between what a '06 is worth now (I'm giving the lowest figure here...at $30.4) and what an '05 is worth (I'm giving the highest figure here...at $28.8). I'm basically defining the band between the two years as best as I can (given that I can't get a New 2005 pricing from any website...and even if I could, it wouldn't be meaningful because it'll likely show up as very close to what an '06 would actually cost. The car sites don't reflect the market accurately in that it's a soft market for S2000 right now). So I'm asking for $1.6 BELOW what I priced out for the 2005 car at the dealership. $29.6 - 1.6 = $28.0 even (after destination, before TTL)

Now...I'm tempted to work my numbers so I start even lower, to lowball them a tad to start, say $27 or $27.5. IDEALLY I'd get $28-$28.5 like the few posts above. Here's the kicker. I HAVE NO IDEA how much this dealer paid for these cars from the other dealers...assuming that they did (and not lied about their cars that've been sitting there on their lot for 2 years). I'm trying to give rationale on why I want it for $28k. If I can back up a decremental figure greater than $1.6k...I can start my offer at say, between $26-$28k. I don't want to piss them off, but I want to be aggressive. Below are some more figures. Please let me know if you think I should start at $26, 26.5, 27, 27.5 or 28. Thanks much!

USED 2005 S2000 (Excellent Cond., 100 miles)
KBB Retail: 29,325
KBB Private Party: 27,150
KBB Trade-In: 24,975

Edmund Retail: 28838

Based on my attempts to trade my old car, I would advise you use to the 'trade in" value for an 05, that's all it is really worth at this point. KBB reatail value is a salesperson's dream.

Holdback is about $1000 (3% of MSRP). I had an offer of $28.5 for an 05 back in Dec. Should be much less now.

At this point, IMO, deal hard on an 06

Goto Stockton Honda. I got an 06 in April for 32,500 OTD. The price was 29,800 without tax, etc... But, it's easier to do an OTD offer. You should be able to do a little better. Since I think they still have like 6 of them in stock.
