Negotiating New 2005 S2000
[QUOTE=addisonc,Jun 9 2006, 08:03 PM] The Bay Area is a hot market for S2000s because of all you rich engineers jacking up home prices as well as car prices.
I would forget about negociating a good deal with the 05 and go straight for an 06.

Based on my attempts to trade my old car, I would advise you use to the 'trade in" value for an 05, that's all it is really worth at this point. KBB reatail value is a salesperson's dream.
Holdback is about $1000 (3% of MSRP). I had an offer of $28.5 for an 05 back in Dec. Should be much less now.
At this point, IMO, deal hard on an 06

You'll never get a new car from a dealership at "trade in" value. I assume you're talking blue book, Yflyer?? No way.
I completely disagree with the comment:
"There's no way to deal hard on an MY06, really, at this time of year, and knowing what we know will be small changes for MY07 (which won't be out 'till the fall)."
You can most certainly deal hard on a 2006. They ran the $299 lease deal in May this year vs August last year so obviously S2000 sales are hurting. Again, there was another poster here who recently said they were quoted $28,900 for a 2006 S2000. This is way below invoice. A 2005 should be a lot lower. In my local paper- The Atlanta Journal- there are two 2005 S2000's listed at $26K. One has 5K miles, the other 9K miles. A new one should be at most $1K more. I was offered a leftover 2005 for $27,500 about a month ago. I would suggest an offer of $26,500 with a goal of $27,000 on a leftover 2005. Paying more is just crazy as you have a 2yr old car as soon as you leave the lot. Otherwise look for a low mileage used 2005.
Good luck!

Well, I guess I didn't mean that folks shouldn't deal; I meant their expectations should be correct. The summer season is upon us, and sub-30K deals are going to be hard to find. In any case, if you think that a brand new car is only going to be a grand more than a used car, I think that's very wishful thinking. You might get lucky and find a dealer willing to do this, but summer is not the time to expect it. Again, this is my opinion.
Yflyer, I completely agree with your point. Any dealer should be willing to sell an 05 for a screaming good deal.

Oh, another point, AHM's May sales numbers for the S year-to-date are only down 2% (< 100 units). Maybe the lease deals have helped this, I don't know, but (to me) it's certainly no indication of any real sales problem.
Just my $0.02.
Just my $0.02.
Don't think May is a good month to look at as units flew off the lot with the 299 offer. A better gauge would be to compare May of 05 to May 06 as they did not have the lease deal in May last year. My guess is the figures for 05 were much lower. Honda would not have such an aggressive lease special if the car was selling well. Look at the 350Z roadster and Mustang GT Cabrio. They are twice the price for the same lease terms even though the cars are a little less or a little more than the S2000.
*EDIT just checked the figures- in May 2005 687 S2K's were sold, in May 2006 908 were sold(a 25% increase). YTD figures are lower for 2006 2,895 total through May vs 2,973 sold through May in 2005. That is likely why they started the incentive as they had sold only 1,987 S2K's through April of 2006.

Yeah, that's a good point. It's interesting though, Honda on the whole is doing extremely well this year. They have no strong motivation to push S2000 sales. It's not like they're making up for anything.
In any case, I don't think you're going to see low prices like were seen in the winter months. I guess we'll see.

I would assume(maybe incorrectly) that the sales boost for May could make them back off of aggressive pricing. I am sure inventories dropped which is what bean counters want. The dealer where I bought my car had 6 S2K's at the begining of May and one at the end...
