New S2000 owner looking for answers to many ?'s
Hello all,
I am happy to now drive among the ranks of S2k owners. I purchased a Black 06 S2000 two Saturdays ago and I can say w/out an once of hesitation that I am blessed to drive such an incredible vehicle! But when it comes to the mechanics of this car I am at a loss and have several ?'s that I would love to have answered.
Any help would be most appreciated and please forgive my ignorance re: several of these ?'s.
1) I'm at about 600 plus miles and my oil life meter is at 90% - is this normal?
2) I was told at the dealership by a very knowledgeable salesman (btw I had already purchased the car at this point) that I should wait until 5k miles before my 1st oil change - he spoke of an additive that Honda uses in the initial batch of oil and stated that 5k miles was needed for the first OC and 3k for each additional OC.
3) I am being very light on the clutch and engine for that matter but have smelled what I believe is either the clutch or engine - sort of a sweet smell? - And I am wondering if this is just the normal smells of a new performance vehicle. Also, this is my first convertible so I suppose I might be smelling the exhaust from other cars - possibly.
4) Tonight I noticed slight heat emanating from the shifter and or area around the gear box. Is this normal?
5) I would also like to upgrade my wheels to the Mugen S2000 wheels (cant quite recall the name of the exact rim set) that were made specifically for the S2k. But the wheels only come in 2 colors and the only appropriate color for my black s2k would be a gun metal finish - the other is perhaps bronze? Has anyone seen these wheels on a black S2000?
Well I have many more ?'s but I don

1) I'm at about 600 plus miles and my oil life meter is at 90% - is this normal?
Yes. It indicates by every 10%. My '06 went to 90% at around 600 and I have 850 now still reading 90%. Oil change intervals are based on engine revolutions and driving style as documented in the owners manual.
2) I was told at the dealership by a very knowledgeable salesman that I should wait until 5k miles before my 1st oil change.
Yes. The oil in the engine is a factory fill. You want normal wear patterns to develop in the cylinders so it's important not to change your oil so early. Changing the oil at 3K miles may be too early but depends on your driving style. I'd follow what the maintenance minder tells you as noted in the owners manual.
3) I am being very light on the clutch and engine for that matter but have smelled what I believe is either the clutch or engine - sort of a sweet smell?
New cars have excess undercoatings that are burn off the hot parts. The smell will go away as the car is driven more.
4) Tonight I noticed slight heat emanating from the shifter and or area around the gear box. Is this normal?
Yes. The transmission will generate heat and it can be felt. On a 70 mile highway drive, I felt the heat of the tranny on my right leg but not so much on the shifter.
Enjoy your S2000. I'm having fun with mine. It's my first convertible. Having never owned a bright color car before (always light blue, white or silver) I broke the mold and got yellow.
